JOB SUMMARY:
The ILS Worker assists Residents to engage in safe smoking in their Home and in meeting the goals set out with the Resident and health care team. As an ILS worker, you will be part of an interprofessional team, assisting Residents to develop safe smoking practices. The ILS worker will provide oversight of the Home’s safe smoking program. This role will work in collaboration with the health care team to enhance safe smoking and facilitate connections with cessation programs while fostering their autonomy and well-being.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Applies the Park Place Seniors Living’s Resident Safe Smoking Risk Assessment and Management policy & procedure.
  2. On move-in, change of status, & annually:
  • Complete the Resident Smoking Risk Assessment as delegated by the Nursing Manager.
  • Complete the Supportive Living Resident Safe Smoking Agreement and review with the Resident as needed.
  1. Ensure Residents who smoke are aware of the designated outdoor smoking areas.
  2. Leads the cigarette distribution program and provide Residents with their smoking materials at designated times.
  3. Monitors all smoking behaviors and provides guidance and strategies for safe smoking.
  4. In collaboration with the care team, develops consequences for unsafe smoking and non-compliances.
  5. Provides letters regarding violations as appropriate.
  6. Provides input into the care plan and supports needed for safe smoking practices.
  7. Participates in family meetings, site meeting and case conferences pertaining to smokers as required.
  8. Facilitate the sharing of education materials on the health risks of smoking, benefits of quitting, and coping strategies for withdrawal.
  9. Facilitates the connection between the Residents and external resources, education sessions and/or one-on-one counseling sessions.
  10. Develops positive rewards for compliance of safe smoking.
  11. Develops nonsmoking group activities for smokers to increase engagement in meaningful initiatives. 
  12. Stay updated on community programs, apps, and tools that support smoking reduction and cessation.
  13. Maintains a database of smokers, violations as per policy and procedure, consequences administered, etc.
  14. Maintains accurate and confidential records of client interactions, progress, and outcomes.
  15. Advocate for client access to healthcare services and programs supporting smoking cessation.
  16. Provide regular updates to Nursing Managers and Resident Services Coordinator.
  17. Accompany a Resident to attend a smoking support program in the community if needed.
  18. Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduation from a recognized Health Care Aide program or Psychiatric Aide Program or Training or Certification in smoking cessation counseling or health education or Certification Tobacco Educator (preferred).
  • Experience in providing one-on-one support or coaching, particularly for behavior change.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with empathy and a non-judgmental approach
  • Knowledge of smoking cessation techniques, resources, and tools.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
  • Experience working with Mental Health  
  • Clear criminal record security clearance with Vulnerable Sector included (no more than 6 months old)
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, result oriented, good time management, strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel programs
  • Strong professional boundaries.
  • Excellent motivation for engaging difficult to engage clients.
  • The ideal candidate will have excellent knowledge of addiction and mental health diagnoses with experience providing support and guidance for these complex needs.
SKILLS AND ABILIITES:
  •  Ability to build rapport and trust with clients from diverse backgrounds.
  • Skilled in motivational interviewing and goal-setting techniques.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple clients and maintain thorough documentation.
  •  Proficiency in using technology for virtual sessions, record-keeping, and communication.
  • Clarity in writing and speech as a way to convey pertinent Resident assessment information
  • Able to work well under direction
  • Must be physically fit to perform lifting and transferring and able to be on your feet for long periods of time
  • First aid considered an asset
  • Flexibility to relate to and anticipate changing Resident needs.
  • Well-developed reasoning, resourcefulness and problem-solving skills

  • Well-developed social skills
